Once Alex Smith went down with a brutal injury yesterday, the Washington Redskins began their search for a backup quarterback. The Redskins brought in several quarterbacks today for workouts, which includes Mark Sanchez.

The expectation around the league was that one would sign a deal later in the afternoon. After all, having depth behind Colt McCoy is pivotal for the remainder of the year.

Well, it appears the winner of that competition is Mark Sanchez.

According to Field Yates, the Redskins will sign Sanchez to serve as the backup quarterback.

Even though he's known for his shortcomings with the New York Jets, the former USC star is a serviceable option.

The former first-round pick was out of the league in 2017, but he did spend time with Dallas in 2016. In addition, Sanchez also was on the Philadelphia Eagles for two seasons, starting 10 total games.

Sanchez won't have to start for the Redskins, unless another injury occurs under center for Washington.
