Why ESPN Is Bringing Hank Williams Jr. Back

An ESPN sign hanging that's very old

Some people think it was a straight PR play.

ESPN announced a controversial hire this morning.

Musician Hank Williams Jr. is coming back to Monday Night Football. Williams' song had been taken off the air in 2011 following controversial political remarks. ESPN's decided to bring him back.

“I think it’s a return to our past in that it’s such an iconic song associated with football,” ESPN senior vice president of events and studio production Stephanie Druley told The Tennessean. “It was the original. It belongs to Monday Night Football. It really is about returning to what fans know. It’s a Monday night party, and that’s what we’re all hoping to get back to.”

Sports Illustrated media critic Richard Deitsch has a theory on why ESPN is doing this. He thinks it's a straight PR play. ESPN has been labeled by some as "too liberal" and this is something that goes against that.
