Why U.S. Soccer Is Getting Criticized For Its Hope Solo Suspension

Hope Solo has been suspended and had her contract terminated by U.S. Soccer.

Many are criticizing U.S. Soccer over the decision, though - not the decision itself, but the timing of it.

Here's U.S. Soccer's statement about the suspension/termination of the contract:

“Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we’ve had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. National Team member, U.S. Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action.”

Solo called Sweden's national team "cowards" after the U.S.' quarterfinals loss in the Olympics. She's also had trouble off of the field. Solo was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault in the fourth degree (one against her half-sister and the other against her nephew) in 2014.

Through her recent troubles, though, she's played in all the important games, and helped the United States' women win, among other things, the World Cup in 2015.

This is why U.S. Soccer is being criticized for their decision.

In the minds of many, suspending her now doesn't really do anything. Solo's 35 and is likely done with the USWNT (or, to put it better, the USWNT is done with her) and the team has no important matches any time in the near future.

The termination of the contract is a fairly big deal, however, and one that could cost Solo $30k+.

Many have taken to Twitter to express their criticism about the decision.
