On Monday night, things couldn't have gone much worse for the Detroit Lions. The team's season-opener at home against the Jets ended in devastating defeat - losing by a final score of 48-17.

The Jets came to town led by rookie quarterback Sam Darnold who was making his first NFL start. After throwing an interception on his first pass, Darnold picked apart a terrible Lions defense en route to a 31-point win.

Heading into the game, Detroit was a seven-point favorite to win. One bettor decided to put down a handsome amount of money on the Lions to win straight up - a bet that in hindsight looks worse than the beat-down put on the Lions Monday night.

The better placed a $40,600 wager on the Lions to win. They lost.

A $40,600 bet seems like a ridiculous price to pay to win $14,000. Of course, if you're betting this kind of money, you probably have money to burn.

Regardless, it hurts to see $40,000 go to waste as the Lions were destroyed at home.
