USWNT star Carli Lloyd made headlines this summer when she successfully drilled a 56-yard field goal. Since then, she's gotten legitimate calls from teams interested in giving her a tryout.
After the latest miss by an NFL kicker, Lloyd has been thrust into the spotlight once more.
In Week 3, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers blew a chance to beat the New York Giants on Sunday when kicker Matt Gay missed what would have been a game-winning 34-yard chip-shot field goal. After Gay's heartbreaking miss, one company is pitching Carli Lloyd as a potential solution to someone's kicking woes.
A newspaper ad placed in the Tampa Bay Times by Secret Deodorant depicts Lloyd kicking a football. The ad headline was "Hey Bucs fans, do you sweat 34-yarders? Carli Lloyd doesn't."
The two-time World Cup winner ultimately turned down offers to try out at NFL camps. She cited her desire to help the USWNT qualify for the 2020 Olympics as her main reason for sticking to soccer.
But it seems likely that Carli Lloyd's name will continue to pop up whenever an NFL kicker misses a big kick.
It also appears that the NFL teams that struggled finding one this past summer are largely doing okay. The Chicago Bears are delighted to have Eddy Pineiro after his game-winning boot against Denver. And even the lowly New York Jets seem satisfied (for now) with Sam Ficken.
Nevertheless, it seems like it's only a matter of time before we see a woman given a real shot to kick in the NFL.
