Jim Kelly underwent surgery to remove oral cancer on Wednesday. According to reports, the procedure was a success.

The former Buffalo Bills quarterback announced that his cancer had returned earlier this month. On Wednesday, he had the cancer removed from his upper jaw, which required reconstruction.

ESPN has more on Jim Kelly's surgery:

"We successfully removed Mr. Kelly's cancer from his upper jaw and lymph nodes from his neck," Dr. Mark Urken, head and neck surgeon at Mount Sinai West, said in a statement. "We then reconstructed his upper jaw. Mr. Kelly is resting comfortably post-operatively."

Kelly was first diagnosed in 2013. The cancer returned in 2014.

He was declared cancer free in 2016. Unfortunately, the disease returned this year, but has hopefully been dealt with here.

Jim Kelly's wife Jill issued an update on his status as well. Via Instagram:

Kelly, who is now 58 years old, played his entire NFL career for the Buffalo Bills. After starring at Miami in college, he played two seasons for the USFL's Houston Gamblers.

He is a five-time Pro Bowl quarterback, earning the honor in 1987, 1988, and 1990-92. He led the NFL in touchdowns in 1991. The Bills went to, and lost, four straight Super Bowls from 1991-94.

Kelly was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. He still lives in Western New York.
