Dolphins Playoff Picture: How Miami Can Make The Postseason

With the NFL playoffs just around the corner, we've compiled every possible scenario that would allow the Miami Dolphins to slip in.

The Miami Dolphins (9-5) are currently second in the AFC East, and have a match-up with the Buffalo Bills this week. Next week, they face off against the New England Patriots. Let's take a look at the Dolphins' playoff picture.

If the season ended today, the Dolphins would be the sixth seed in the AFC playoff picture, but right on their heels are two 8-6 teams still very much in the hunt: the Broncos and the Ravens. Factor in that only the AFC East division has been clinched, and you've got several other teams possibly in the Wild Card mix, including the Steelers and the Chiefs. It's a huge debacle. With that in mind, listed below are all of the possible scenarios that get the Dolphins into the NFL playoffs.

They can be a fifth seed Wild Card team...

  • By beating the Bills in Week 16 AND the Patriots in Week 17 AND the Chiefs lose out.

They can be a sixth seed Wild Card team...

  • By beating the Bills in Week 16 AND the Patriots in Week 17.
  • By beating the Bills in Week 16 OR the Patriots in Week 17 AND the Broncos lose to the Chiefs in Week 16 OR to the Raiders in Week 17.
  • By beating the Bills in Week 16 OR the Patriots in Week 17 AND the Chiefs lose to the Chargers in Week 17.

Obviously, the path of least resistance would be to win out, as that guarantees them at least the sixth seed, but the Dolphins aren't favored in either match-up, so it's certainly easier said than done. As it stands, the Dolphins have a 55 percent chance of making the playoffs, per FiveThirtyEight.
