Former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa has been linked to the Miami Dolphins for some time now. But the Detroit Lions have also emerged as a potential landing spot for the elite prospect.
Miami has a more desperate need for a franchise quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the Dolphins’ current starter with Josh Rosen sitting on the bench, but it’s no secret neither are long-term options for Miami.
As for the Lions, they already have a franchise quarterback. It’d be extremely unwise to ship Matthew Stafford elsewhere considering he still has plenty left in the tank. But Detroit wants to shore up its future – Tagovailoa could be the perfect fit.
If the Lions want, they could take Tagovailoa with their No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft. Or, they could leverage the situation and persuade the Dolphins to trade picks as Miami clearly wants to land the elite quarterback prospect. Draft expert Todd McShay believes if Miami hopes to land Tagovailoa, it’ll have to trade up with Detroit to obtain the coveted No. 3 pick.
“I think you go to (No.) 3, and that’s the spot that, if you’re Miami with six picks in the top 70 overall, five in the first two rounds, three in the first round,” McShay said on ESPN’s First Take, via 247Sports. “. . . They’ve gotta make a decision: Are we gonna trust our medical team in March and go up and get that move up to Detroit at 3 or the Giants at 4, or are we gonna stick at 5.”
It looks like a major trade could potentially be in the works.
Tagovailoa is an elite talent. Detroit, Miami and other teams hope to land the former Alabama QB.
But if Miami is going to sign the elite passer, it looks like it’ll have to trade up in the draft order.
These next two months leading up to the NFL Draft will be filled with rumors regarding this potential trade.
