The New England Patriots have struggled mightily on defense, and those issues have just been amplified with the loss of Pro Bowl linebacker Dont'a Hightower.

Hightower has 14 total tackles and two sacks on the season, after signing a new four-year deal with the Pats during the off-season.

The former Alabama great missed multiple games in September, and now, his season is reportedly over.

Multiple reports state that Hightower has suffered a torn pectoral muscle.

Hightower is one of the principles of the Pats defense, making the Pro Bowl and being named a Second Team All-Pro last season. While New England is coming off of a strong performance against defending NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons, it has fielded one of the worst defenses in the NFL so far this season. Taking away a key linebacker can't help matters.

The Patriots host the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday.
