New England Patriots starting running back Sony Michel has been noticeably absent from camp this month with an injury.
But NFL insider Ian Rapoport has news that should be a little reassuring to fans. On Wednesday, he revealed that Michel has been removed from the PUP list and was at practice today.
Michel was placed on the PUP list earlier this month following foot surgery. Had he stayed on the list for much longer, he would have been deactivated for the first few games of 2020.
While it's not clear how much Michel will practice this week - if at all - it's a very positive step. If nothing else, his presence gives New England's opponents one more thing to prepare for as they begin the post-Brady era.
The Patriots drafted Sony Michel 31st overall in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He quickly justified the pick, rushing for over 900 yards in each of his first two seasons while scoring 13 touchdowns.
In a transition year like this one, the Patriots will need all of the consistency on offense that they can muster. If there's one thing that Michel brings to the table, it's consistency.
The Patriots will have a new quarterback, either Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham or Brian Hoyer. But as long as they have a strong running game, it'll take the burden off the new starter.
Will Sony Michel see an increased work rate in 2020?
