Cam Newton’s days as a starting quarterback in the NFL appear to be numbered. That doesn’t mean the former MVP has no place in the league, though.
There are plenty of teams in the NFL that could use a quality backup quarterback for the 2021 season. Newton would be an immediate upgrade for several teams, but there are people questioning whether he’d be willing to take a backup role.
During this Wednesday’s edition of Undisputed on FS1, Shannon Sharpe revealed Newton’s thoughts on being a backup quarterback. He claims that Newton is OK with the idea of being the No. 2 option on the depth chart.
“I talked to someone close to Cam, and what I was told is that Cam would not have a problem being a backup,” Sharpe said. “He says, ‘I don’t want that out there that Cam is opposed to being a backup. Cam wants to get into a good situation, and we’ll go from there, we’ll take it from there.’”

If Sharpe’s report about Newton is accurate, teams like the Dallas Cowboys would be wise to check in on him.
On Tuesday, NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that Dallas would do its due diligence in reviewing Newton’s newfound availability. He would be a much more appealing backup to Dak Prescott than Cooper Rush or Will Grier.
Time will tell if NFL teams believe Newton has gas left in the tank.
