Most of the spectators at Belmont Park this afternoon were probably rooting for history, and they got it. Justify went wire-to-wire to win the race and capture the Triple Crown.
Rob Gronkowski was not there for Justify, though. His horse allegiances were much closer to home.
One of the horses in the race was named after the New England Patriots tight end. Gronkowski eventually bought stake in the Gronkowski the horse.
Today, he got to see his equine namesake in action. It was almost a miracle win.
Gronkowski the horse began way behind the rest of the pack. He wound up gaining serious ground, and finished second in the race.
The full race, with Gronkowski finishing only behind Justify, from NBC:
Cameras were on Gronk, the football player, and his girlfriend Camille Kostek the whole time. He did not disappoint.
Of course, the second place finish also opened up jokes about the Patriots' Super Bowl loss.
Unfortunately for Gronk, Gronk did not get the win. It would have been a huge upset, between the comeback and the 12/1 odds on the horse. Those that put the him in their exactas and trifectas are probably pretty happy though.
