The San Francisco 49ers have been the focus of this week’s Tom Brady speculation. As unlikely as it seems, some believe the franchise could look to replace Jimmy Garoppolo, fresh off of an NFC Championship, with the legendary quarterback he once backed up in New England.
A few different tapped in New England and NFL reporters think there is something to the rumors. Tom Curran promoted the idea on Wednesday. Later in the night, Tony Pauline admitted that the rumor “has legs.” For their part, the decision makers in San Francisco have publicly backed Garoppolo whenever the idea has come up in recent months.
The betting markets continue to change pretty drastically as more information becomes available. The main constant: the Patriots remain a pretty strong favorite to hold on to the future Hall of Famer. Of course, at -120 odds, they’re just slightly better than 50/50 to be the choice, compared to the field. The 49ers have some steam, though they are outside of the top five options.
San Francisco currently sits at +1000 to land Brady. In between the Pats and Niners are the Tennessee Titans (+500), the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers (+600), and Indianapolis Colts (+900). The Titans have been a hot rumor, with Mike Vrabel refusing to leak plans for the quarterback position in recent weeks. Tom Brady and Julian Edelman were also spotted FaceTiming with Vrabel from a Syracuse basketball game last weekend.

The other teams listed with odds are interesting, but definitely about as far-fetched as San Francisco. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem ready to part ways with Jameis Winston, and have plenty of weapons, but Bruce Arians’ downfield attack may not mesh well with Brady’s solid but declining arm strength.
Chicago has a defense built to win big, but the team says Mitchell Trubisky will get another shot under center this fall. The Cowboys have made every indication that it will lock up quarterback Dak Prescott long term. Miami would probably like to go quarterback in the NFL Draft. Even if they don’t land someone like Tua Tagovailoa, it seems very unlikely that Brady would go to a rebuilding team like the Dolphins.
Brady officially hits free agency on March 18, when the new NFL year begins. The “legal tampering period” begins two days before that.
