After a tough battle in camp, the No. 15 overall pick established himself as the starting quarterback. Head coach Bill Belichick announced as much earlier this week while also announcing the release of Newton.
Despite Newton’s veteran status, most analysts believe the Patriots made the right move. Earlier this afternoon, Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd suggested team will win two more games with Jones than they would have with Newton.
He’s not alone. Former NFL quarterback Tony Romo also expects the Patriots to be dangerous this year.
“I’m convinced the Patriots are for real. No one’s gonna want to play them,” Romo said of the Patriots this afternoon.

During the 2020 season, the Patriots struggled to move the ball on offense. While Cam Newton found success as a runner, he failed to crack 3,000 passing yards and threw for single-digit touchdowns.
With Jones in charge of the offense, New England should see a major boost in the passing game. Add in the returning starters on defense who opted out of the 2020 season and the Patriots have the makings of a playoff team.
Just a year after losing Tom Brady in free agency, the team may just have their quarterback of the future – much to the chagrin of football fans outside of New England.
