When the Patriots begin their Super Bowl title defense tonight against the Steelers there will be one key player scratched from the lineup: Kyle Van Noy. But he isn’t injured, and might actually be more excited for not playing when all is said and done.
According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, Van Noy is inactive for tonight’s game because his wife is currently in labor. Per the report, the Patriots were aware going into the day that it was a possibility.
Needless to say, the prospect of becoming a father and being there for his wife far outweighs playing an NFL game.
But that isn’t to say that the Patriots won’t miss him. Van Noy has come into his own as a big contributor for the Patriots over the last two years.

The 28-year-old linebacker is heading into his sixth NFL season and his third with the New England Patriots. Prior to joining the Patriots via a trade in 2016, Van Noy was a reserve linebacker for the Detroit Lions.
But Van Noy quickly rose up the depth chart in New England. Last year he played in and started all 16 regular season games for the Patriots.
He played a big role in their playoff run last season, recording key sacks in the AFC Championship Game and their Super Bowl win.
Good luck with fatherhood, Kyle!
