On Thursday night, Baker Mayfield was pretty clearly the best quarterback on the field during the Cleveland Browns' long-awaited win vs. the New York Jets.
Tyrod Taylor started the game, but was very ineffective before leaving with a concussion.
The Browns were forced to punt on the first six drives of the game. Taylor was just 4-for-14 for 19 yards, and took three sacks.
Mayfield came into the game for the last drive of the first half, with the Browns down 14-0, and led the team to a field goal. From there, he looked very good against the Jets defense, leading Cleveland to a 18-3 second half, and 21-17 win.
He was 17-for-23 for 201 yards, and caught a two-point conversion from Jarvis Landry on a trick play. He was better than Taylor, and outplayed fellow star rookie quarterback Sam Darnold, whom he outgained 201-169 despite playing just over one half. Darnold was 15-for-31 and threw two picks.
Hue Jackson is getting made fun of for saying that he has to watch the tape of Baker Mayfield and Tyrod Taylor before naming the Browns starter next week.
It is very much unsurprising coach-speak, but obviously he doesn't want to insult Taylor, a consummate professional on all accounts, while he is hurt.
At least one sportsbook is pretty sure it knows who is starting.
Bovada has odds on the Browns starter for Week 4. Mayfield is a heavy favorite.
For the non-bettors, that means one has to bet $10k to win $100 on Baker starting here.
