Even though he is on voice rest following vocal cord surgery, Dick Vitale is speaking out about the Steelers' hiring Brian Flores as an assistant coach.

Flores, who was fired by the Miami Dolphins after three seasons as head coach, was hired by Pittsburgh as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach on Saturday. This news comes while Flores has an ongoing lawsuit against the NFL alleging racial discrimination in hiring practices.

Vitale is one of those who thinks Flores should have another head coaching position right now, and he let his opinion be known on Twitter this afternoon.

"THIS IS A CRIME -BRIAN FLORES is a PROVEN HEAD COACH [and] should have been hired when there were openings," Vitale wrote. "HOWEVER CONGRATS to ⁦

">@NFL as an assistant."

Flores should be deserving of another shot as a head coach at some point, but for now, he'll become the latest piece of a loaded Steelers defensive staff. It's a position he is overqualified for, and his knowledge and experience should help Pittsburgh's defense remain among the best in the NFL.

“I am excited about Brian Flores joining our coaching staff given his history of developing and teaching defensive players during his time in the NFL,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said on Saturday. “Brian’s resume speaks for itself, and I look forward to him adding his expertise to help our team.”

This will be the first time Flores is an assistant since he was the linebackers coach of the New England Patriots in 2018.
