With the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft officially in the books, Peter Schrager hopped on The Pat McAfee Show this Friday to share his thoughts on what transpired on Thursday night.

Schrager revealed that he was "shocked" the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Kenny Pickett with the 20th pick. There were several insiders who linked Malik Willis to the Steelers.

Instead, the Steelers opted to go with a quarterback who played his college football in Pittsburgh.

"I was shocked. I thought Willis or Ridder to the Steelers," Schrager said. "That was the intel I was getting. They go Pickett, who they watched every day at practice and they kept that pretty close to the vest. They must have really liked him."

Pickett didn't shy away from expressing his excitement over how Day 1 of the draft unfolded.

“I was speechless,” Pickett told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It’s my life’s work, and it felt awesome. It was unbelievable to spend that moment with my family and my fiancée and everyone that was important to me. It was just really special."

In his final season at Pitt, Pickett completed 67.2 percent of his passes with 4,319 yards and 42 touchdowns.

The Steelers are hopeful Pickett will eventually develop into a franchise quarterback.
