Over the past two season, few NFL players have been better in their respective position than star pass rusher T.J. Watt.
After being selected in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Watt has lived up to the hype as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in each of the past two seasons. He’s one of the best players at his position and wants to be paid like it.
Ahead of the 2021 season, Watt hasn’t been doing much for the Steelers. During training camp, the star outside linebacker hasn’t been participating as he waits for a new deal.
Steelers owner and president Art Rooney II opened up on contract talks with Watt. He said the team is trying to get a deal done before the 2021 season kicks off.
Here’s what he said, via Steelers.com.
“We’d like to get T.J.’s deal done, if we can, before the start of the season,” said Rooney. “That’s the goal. I don’t like to get into those details in terms of the discussions, but we’re going to try to get it done by the start of the season if we can.”
Rooney said he’s been part of contract talks that go well – and some that don’t. With that in mind, he’s trying not to be too optimistic or pessimistic.
“I try not to get optimistic or pessimistic. I’ve seen these things go so many different ways over the years. We’re just going to do our best and I think both sides want to get something done so that’s always a good thing.”
One thing is certain: Watt will be thee highest paid outside linebacker/defensive end in the game in the very near future.
