Veteran NFL Quarterback Says He Won't Mentor Rookie

A general view of the Tennessee Titans stadium during the day.

With the 86th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans selected Liberty quarterback Malik Willis. It was a fascinating pick considering Ryan Tannehill is currently their starter.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Tannehill commented on the Titans' newest addition to the quarterback room.

Tannehill revealed that he texted Willis to congratulate him on being drafted by the Titans.

That being said, Tannehill doesn't believe it's his job to be a mentor to Willis.

“We’re competing against each other, we’re watching the same tape, we’re doing the same drills,” Tannehill told reporters. “I don’t think it’s my job to mentor him, but if he learns from me along the way, then that’s a great thing.”

That quote probably won't sit well with Titans fans.

As for Willis, he recently referred to Tannehill as a great leader.

"Ryan Tannehill is a great player, and he's a great leader for this organization," Willis said, via ESPN. "I just want to come in and just do all I can in order to get better at my craft. Whenever that time comes for me to get on the field, then that time will come. But until then, I'm just going to try to learn and be the best teammate that I can be."

The expectation at this time is that Willis will spend the 2022 season watching from the sidelines.
