The New York Giants and Washington Redskins have garnered a lot of attention for their quarterback situation. But it appears that another team has emerged with a possible controversy.

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, the Tennessee Titans starting QB role is "wide open." Per the report, it would appear that some coaches prefer backup quarterback Ryan Tannehill over Marcus Mariota.

To make matters worse for Mariota, he will reportedly be "short leash" even if he beats Tannehill for the job.

Mariota has reportedly done little to assert himself in camp this summer and is quickly losing ground to former Dolphins starter Ryan Tannehill... Volin also cited a recent ESPN report that suggested Mariota is "no lock" to start while noting that some of the team's coaches prefer Tannehill. Even if Mariota is able to hold off Tannehill for the starting job, Volin said he figures to be on a "short leash..."

Mariota has been the Titans' starting quarterback since his rookie season, but is only 27-28 as a starter. He is heading into the final year of his rookie deal after going No. 2 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft.

But rather than iron out a contract extension for Mariota this offseason, they picked up a very serviceable backup.

Mariota helped lead the Titans to the playoffs in the 2017 season, upsetting the Chiefs in the Wild Card Round. But he struggled this past year, getting sacked a whopping 42 times in 14 games and throwing just 11 touchdowns.

Tannehill's career outlook hasn't been much better than Mariota's, though. In Miami he also had a penchant for taking sacks, and had just one winning season for the Dolphins.

One thing's for sure: The next few weeks are going to be very important for Mariota's career with the Titans.
