ESPN's Todd McShay Has Baker Mayfield Going No. 5 To Denver Broncos

Baker Mayfield continues to climb the boards NFL Draft experts.

Earlier today, ESPN NFL Draft expert Todd McShay dropped his new mock draft. The full thing is available for those with ESPN Insider, but spoiler alert: Baker Mayfield makes an early appearance.

The write-up for McShay's first pick is available. He has the Cleveland Browns taking a quarterback in the No. 1 spot.

There has been plenty of speculation about which quarterback the Browns will tap with its first pick. Cleveland also holds the No. 4 pick, but it is expected to go quarterback first.

The four major QBs in the class are Mayfield, Wyoming's Josh Allen, USC's Sam Darnold, and UCLA's Josh Rosen. Right now, McShay likes the Trojan gunslinger at No. 1.

"Between off-field issues for Rosen and his tools and intangibles on the field, Darnold should be the pick. I understand why Kiper went with Josh Allen in his first mock, but Darnold is a little safer. He's the best of the bunch at this point."

McShay acknowledges that we are early in the process. He says all four big QBs are "in play" right now.

All four are selected in the first six picks of McShay's new mock. He likes Rosen to go right after Darnold to the Giants, Mayfield to go No. 5 to Denver, and Allen to the Jets at No. 6.

The Broncos have been desperately searching for their quarterback of the future. Since Peyton Manning's retirement, and really halfway through that Super Bowl season when Manning became a bit of a liability, the position has been an issue for Denver.

Brock Osweiler was clearly not the answer, and while he's had some moments, it doesn't look like Trevor Siemian will be either. Mayfield would definitely be an exciting new direction for the franchise, even if he's far from a sure thing at the next level.
