There are plenty of top-tier candidates to be the NFL’s No. 1 player in 2021. Aaron Donald, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson and Tom Brady could all be the guy this coming year. But who does ESPN believe will be the NFL’s best player this coming season?
In a new feature, the ESPN Staff made their preseason ranking of the top players in the league for 2021. The consensus was that Patrick Mahomes will be the top player and MVP favorite. Analyst Adam Teicher wrote out the decision:
“Mahomes was under pressure too often last season, particularly in Super Bowl LV. The Chiefs appear to have fixed the problem by rebuilding their offensive line, which could feature five new starters. Mahomes had surgery to repair turf toe shortly after the Super Bowl, but showed no ill effects during training camp,” Teicher wrote.
Patrick Mahomes would be a strong pick. Since his first year as a starter in 20, Mahomes has 114 touchdown passes, nearly 14,000 passing yards and a 66-percent completion rate. He is 38-8 as a starter with a 6-2 postseason record.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has rapidly become the face of the NFL. He’s only 25 but has already achieved just about everything that an NFL player can – short of making a dynasty.
Picking Mahomes to win any big accolade in a given year is a pretty strong bet.
