Kansas City Chiefs fans got quite a surprise this morning when leading rusher LeSean McCoy was scratched despite not showing up on the injury report this week.
But one NFL insider discovered that McCoy’s surprise absence today is more pragmatic than it is problematic.
NFL Network’s James Palmer revealed on Sunday that today’s absence is part of a “predetermined rest week” for McCoy. Per his report, the Chiefs want McCoy “fresh down the stretch.”
The 31-year-old McCoy has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but has seemed rejuvenated in Kansas City. He’s currently averaging 5.2 yards per carry – the second-highest average of his 11-year career.

In McCoy’s place starting today will be Damien Williams, who is second on the team in yards and touches but leads the team in rushing touchdowns.
Williams has also proven to be a solid receiving threat. His 17 receptions for 118 yards are just below McCoy’s numbers despite playing in two fewer games than the six-time Pro Bowler.
One thing’s for sure: Fantasy football owners won’t be too happy about this. Especially now that Patrick Mahomes is back to stretch the field and give his backs more receptions.
The Chiefs play the Tennessee Titans on the road at 1:00 p.m. EST today.
What kind of effect will LeSean McCoy’s absence have on the Chiefs today?
