The days of Cam Newton leading the Carolina Panthers are officially over. On Tuesday, the news broke that he’ll be released by the team that drafted him back in 2011.
It’s a tough ending to Newton’s time with the Panthers, especially when you consider how special the bond is between him and the fan base. That being said, the former MVP has dealt with a plethora of injuries that have hindered his availability on Sundays.
Newton isn’t the playmaker he once was in Carolina, but any franchise in need of a spark should consider signing him. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk thinks the team that needs Newton the most is the Los Angeles Chargers.
Los Angeles is currently set to enter the 2020 season with Tyrod Taylor as its starting quarterback. Taylor is a proven commodity in the NFL, yet he doesn’t exactly generate a crowd like Newton does on a weekly basis.
Here’s why Florio believes the Chargers should go after Newton, via ProFootballTalk:
Newton has it. Taylor doesn’t. Newton’s attitude already fits with L.A. He’ll generate excitement. He’ll sell tickets. He’ll sell jerseys, becoming the first Chargers player ever worth a crap (apologies to Benny Ricardo) to wear No. 1.
The Chargers have plenty of weapons on offense. Austin Ekeler signed a four-year deal with the team this offseason and Hunter Henry received the franchise tag.
Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are on the roster for next season too, which means Newton would have a solid receiving duo at his disposal.
Since the Chargers have already had trade discussions with the Panthers about Newton, it would make plenty of sense for them to sign him now that it won’t cost them any draft picks.
Do you think Cam Newton would be a solid addition for the Chargers?
