Moments ago, ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the absolutely shocking news of Andrew Luck’s retirement. The 29-year old former No. 1 pick is stepping away from the game weeks ahead of the 2019 season.
Luck was dealing with an ankle injury. The Indianapolis Colts star has missed significant time due to injury, and based on the reports by Schefter and Ian Rapoport, those have seriously weighed on him.
The timing is made even more interesting with the Colts playing tonight. He is on hand for the team’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears.
As the shocking news spreads on social media, to the point that Schefter’s story appears to have briefly crashed ESPN.com, Luck was spotted on the Colts sideline. Naturally, pictures of him are making the rounds.
He’s seen here in a gray t-shirt speaking to the Colts’ new presumptive starter, Jacoby Brissett.

There are just a few minutes left in the Colts-Bears game. As Aaron Matas says there, expect the media coverage of the post-game to be unlike anything we’ve seen during preseason before.
Andrew Luck’s status entering the year was a bit up in the air due to the ankle injury, but he saw an impressive return to form last year coming off of a season-long shoulder injury. He was expected to be in the MVP mix, and the Colts were the favorite in the AFC South entering the 2019 season.
His sudden retirement, assuming the reports are accurate, truly shakes up the entire NFL.
