Baker Mayfield may have come out on top in the bizarre Richard Sherman handshake debacle, but that only goes so far. He’s still coming off an absolutely disastrous game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Mayfield was just 8-for-22 for 100 yards on Monday night. He had three total turnovers in the game, including two interceptions.
Of course, it was a team loss. The Browns fell to the 49ers 31-3.
The Browns have flashed at times this season, specifically during the team’s 40-25 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Mayfield hasn’t toned down his fiery personality that made him so popular in college, and that isn’t winning him a ton of friends on other teams in the league.
With the Browns at 2-3 and Mayfield struggling in his second year, Bleacher Report columnist Mike Freeman spoke to some veteran players who are highly critical of Mayfield, with one going so far as to say that that Mayfield “acts like he’s won 10 Super Bowls.”
Veterans around the NFL tell @mikefreemanNFL they think Baker is too cocky and acts like a better player than he is.

From Freeman’s column:
“Players, and not in insignificant numbers, have been saying quietly for some time they believe Mayfield acts like he’s a better player than he is. Said one defensive player who has a Super Bowl ring: ‘He acts like he’s won 10 Super Bowls. He hasn’t won any.’
“Players will tolerate cockiness if it can be backed up with ability and winning. And sometimes, not even winning. Great play gives you great leeway in this league.
“But Mayfield also has run afoul of the expectation that players should show other players respect, especially veteran ones.”
Baker Mayfield will tell you that his attitude has helped him go from Big 12 walk-on to Heisman winner to No. 1 pick. None of that is going to impress NFL veterans though, unless he starts playing more consistently and putting some wins on the board.
