The major story in the NFL today has been Baker Mayfield's comments on New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, which appeared in a new profile for GQ.

Mayfield is quoted as saying he "couldn't believe" the Giants drafted Jones at No. 6 overall. He also said NFL teams “forget you’ve gotta win” in college.

A short time ago, Mayfield posted an Instagram story clarifying his comments, which he says were taken out of context.

"Full quote for you people that don't understand the media is making a story," it read, followed by a screen shot of follow-up statements he made on Barstool Sports' Instagram post of his quotes about Jones.

"This is not what I said....just so we're clear. I also said I was surprised I got drafted number one. Then was talking about the flaws in evaluating QB's. Where I brought up winning being important. Reporters and media will do anything to come up with a click bait story. Heard nothing but good things and wish nothing but the best for Daniel."

Perhaps Baker is telling the truth here. Perhaps he's just backpedaling because of the backlash he received.

Either way, by now, he has to know everything he says about any topic will be scrutinized ad nauseum.

It doesn't sound like Jones or his head coach Pat Shurmur care much about the comments anyway. They make for a fun topic of discussion for fans and the media though.

Can football season please start soon?
