After the release of his new profile in GQ, you can add Baker Mayfield to the long list of people who didn't understand why the New York Giants took Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick this year.
Mayfield is quoted as saying it "blows my mind" that the Giants picked Jones where they did. He adds that NFL teams "forget you've gotta win" in college, where Jones was 17-19 as a starter.
Giants head coach Pat Shurmur was asked about Mayfield's comments during today's media availability. He downplayed their significance while also sticking up for Jones in the process.
A lot of people, myself included, were dumbfounded with the Jones selection, but at this point, none of it matters. He's in New York, and will ultimately be judged on how he performs when it is his time to be the starter.
Baker's comments probably weren't smart coming from a starting quarterback in the NFL, but he's never going to be shy about shooting from the hip. That's why multiple major outlets have profiled him this offseason.
What this "controversy" really says is this: we need some actual damn football to be played so we can have real things to talk about.
