On Wednesday morning, ESPN released a feature on Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Written by Mina Kimes, the feature explored everything from Mayfield’s impact on young fans to his reaction to the Browns landing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
The story ran the gamut on the young quarterback, even revealing how he courted his wife, Emily.
Mayfield and Emily Wilkinson married over the weekend, but she was hesitant to go on a date with the then-Oklahoma star.
According to Wilkinson, Mayfield repeatedly followed and unfollowed her on Instagram to get her attention.
The story gets a little more romantic after that:
“I was assuming he’d be the typical playboy athlete,” says Wilkinson, who is four years older than Mayfield. Because the Rose Bowl was the next day, she thought they’d spend most of their date talking about the game. But it barely came up. Instead, she says, Mayfield spent their entire first date peppering her with questions about herself, her family, her plans for the future. The next day, after Oklahoma lost, ending its season, the quarterback texted Wilkinson and told her he was staying in LA. Three days later, he moved in with her and her brothers. Six months later, Emily and Baker were engaged.
Life is good for Baker and Emily.
After getting married, Mayfield enters the season as an MVP frontrunner. He leads a Browns team that is one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl this year.
