Former Kansas Jayhawks' head coach Charlie Weis has been out of coaching since 2014, but the 62-year-old was reportedly considering a comeback this year.

The former Kansas and Notre Dame head coach, who also spent multiple decades as an assistant coach at the NFL level, says he spoke to an NFL team about a major assistant job.

Weis revealed that he talked with Matt Patricia about the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator gig.

“We talked, but it never got to that point,” Weis said, per the Detroit Free Press. “There was no interview. Matt and I are too close to go through an interview. If it ever would have happened, it would have been, ‘Hey, you want to come?’ And I would have said yes or no. It wouldn’t have been anything other than that.”

Weis was an assistant coach for the Patriots from 1993-96 and again from 2000-04. Patricia was an offensive assistant under Weis in New England in 2004.

The former Patriots' assistant left New England for the Notre Dame head coaching job after the 2004 season and reportedly tried to bring Patricia with him, but he stayed with Belichick.

Patricia was with the Pats from 2004-17 before getting the Detroit Lions' head coaching job.

The Lions are coming off a disappointing 6-10 season.
