Report: Chicago Bears Fire Matt Eberflus After Thanksgiving Disaster

Matt Eberflus said he was "confident" the Chicago Bears would retain his services for Week 14. Well, he thought wrong.

Moments ago, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that Eberflus has been fired by the Bears. He's the first coach in franchise history to be fired mid-season. Now that he's out of the picture, Thomas Brown will serve as the interim coach.

Eberflus finishes his Bears tenure with a 14-32 record. That's not good enough considering Chicago has definitely had talent the past two seasons.

The final game of Eberflus' run with the Bears will be remembered as an utter disaster. He poorly managed the clock in a situation where his squad could've attempted a game-tying field goal at the very minimum. Not only did he mismanage the clock, he defended his mistakes in the postgame press conference.

"We're at 36 seconds right there and our hope was, because it was third [down] going into fourth [down], that we would rerack that play at 18 seconds, throw it inbounds, get it in field goal range and then call a timeout," Eberflus told reporters. "I like what we did there. I think we handled it the right way, I do believe that you just rerack the play, get it in bounds and call timeout, and that's why we held it and didn't work out the way we wanted it to."

The Bears have already parted ways with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron this season. With Eberflus now fired, it's safe to say major changes will be coming this offseason.

Before the Bears can think about their staff for the 2025 season, they'll need to take on the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. In other words, things could get worse before they get better.
