Nearly a week ago the Chicago Bears announced defensive coordinator Alan Williams would not coach against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for personal reasons.

A week later, head coach Matt Eberflus declined to say if Williams would be making a return to the team. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Eberflus said, “I don’t have any update right now."

While the head coach isn't speaking publicly about Williams, there are some troubling rumors starting to emerge. One Bears writer said the rumors are "shocking" but declined to get into specifics.

"The story I'm hearing around Alan Williams, if true, is shocking," Bill Zimmerman said on X - formerly known as Twitter. "I would not expect him to ever return to the Chicago Bears. It has nothing to do with his coaching performance."

With Williams away from the team, Eberflus made it clear he believes the defense will be just fine.

"I've done it for 12 years total," Eberflus said of calling defensive plays. "Really, it's more about the operation of the game-management side of it...When we're off the field, to make the corrections pretty quick, the guys on the sideline are going to help me do that with the players. And from there it's just about setting up the next series, what's coming the next series for those guys, if we can communicate that. And from there it's just normal."

Chicago fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by a score of 27-17 in Eberflus' first attempt as the defensive coordinator.

He'll get another shot this weekend - this time against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
