Mike McCarthy Announces Cowboys Star Is Out For The Season
The Dallas Cowboys will have to compete the rest of the season without their most accomplished offensive lineman.
On Thursday afternoon, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy announced that All-Pro offensive guard Zack Martin will have season-ending surgery on his ankle. He's been battling that injury for most of the season. With him out for the final five games, Dallas will lean on Brock Hoffman at right guard. The Virginia Tech product is only in his second NFL season.
This is an unfortunate development for Martin, who has just one year remaining on his contract with the Cowboys. It's unclear if this surgery will affect his outlook for the 2025 season.
For what it's worth, Cowboys star Micah Parsons recently talked about this year potentially being Martin's last in the NFL. It just got overshadowed by his comments about the coaching staff.
"That's above my pay grade, if Mike's coach again next year," Parsons said. "All coaching aside, Mike can leave and go where he wants to. Guys I kind of feel bad for is guys like Zack Martin and guys who might be on their last year, on their way out, because that's who I wanted to hold the trophy for. You want to win games and do great things with those type of legends who put in more time and work than Mike McCarthy ever did. So, those are the kind of guys that I have so much sympathy and hurt for."
Martin, the longest-tenured player on the Cowboys, started his NFL career in 2014. The Notre Dame product was selected with the 16th pick. That turned out to be a wise move from Jerry Jones and the rest of the front office.
Over the past decade, Martin has earned first-team All-Pro honors seven times. He's actually tied with Bob Lilly and Randy White for the most All-Pro selections in franchise history.
Hopefully, Martin is able to bounce back from his surgery and return to form in 2025.
