The Cowboys Have Officially Responded To Dak Prescott Contract Report
It isn't often that you see a team directly respond to a report about a contract situation involving one of its players.
The Dallas Cowboys did just that on Tuesday afternoon, commenting on intel published earlier today by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
"The #Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year," Rapoport said. "Owner Jerry Jones said, 'We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.' No indication a deal is coming. This appears to clears the path for Dak Prescott to test free agency in 2025."
While Prescott, who has one year remaining on his current deal, could certainly still make it to free agency next offseason, the Cowboys emphasized in a statement that its possible the two sides will work out a long-term deal before that happens.
“Per the team, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys have had extension discussions but it is ‘not a pressurized situation for either at this point,'" the Cowboys said, via Nick Harris of the team's website. "The door remains open for a deal to get done this offseason or during the 2024 season, but there is no urgency as of now.”
Prescott currently carries a cap hit of more than $55 million for 2024, which could be reduced if a new contract is agreed upon. Obviously, Dallas is prepared to move forward financially without one, even with the hefty charge.
“He is willing to do everything he can to help us win,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, “and so we are where we are. We have our contract, locked and loaded for this year. We can see as we move along how we are thinking, inclusive of everybody, including Dak. We’ll see what we do. I don’t have anything to report today.”
Prescott is entering his ninth professional season, all of which have come with Dallas.
