Julian Edelman knows good quarterback play. Obviously, he's won three Super Bowls, and the most recent Super Bowl MVP award, playing next to perhaps the greatest of all time: Tom Brady.
He played some quarterback himself years ago too, though. Edelman starred at the position for Kent State, before making the full-time switch to wide receiver in the NFL.
Edelman was a smaller, shifty quarterback who could beat defenses with his arm and his legs. That has turned into something of a model down at Oklahoma, which has produced back-to-back Heisman winners and No. 1 picks that fit the description in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.
Murray still has to prove himself, but Mayfield is well on his way to NFL stardom, after an impressive rookie campaign that has Cleveland Browns fans as confident as they've been in what feels like a generation.
Julian Edelman was not afraid to share some serious praise for Baker Mayfield in a recent Bleacher Report AMA.
Edelman was asked which quarterback he would best compare his game to, and went with Baker, though he admitted that he didn't have anywhere near the arm talent of the Heisman winner.
The full answer from the Pats' star:
“By no means do I think I’m even closely as talented or as good as him, but I love Baker. Competitor, feisty. I couldn’t throw it like him. I used to run it better, I like him. He’s not afraid to get up in your grill."
Mayfield hasn't really toned down the brashness that rubbed some the wrong way during his college career, but he's backed it up enough that he's started to earn serious respect after just one year in the league.
