Saints Officially Signed Notable Quarterback Today
The Saints officially signed rookie quarterback Jake Haener this Tuesday afternoon, confirming the news on Twitter.
Haener was selected by the Saints in the fourth round of this year's draft. After starting his college career at Washington, he transferred to Fresno State.
In three seasons at Fresno State, Haener completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 9,013 yards with 67 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He earned All-Mountain West honors in 2021 and 2022.
Haener will now have the chance to learn behind Derek Carr and Jameis Winston this offseason.
Although there are some concerns about Haener's stature, there's no question he's an efficient passer who knows how to be a field general.
"You wouldn't think he was 6-foot tall when you watch him," Saints general manager Jeff Ireland said. "He's got great processing ability. He's got great vision. He's got a quick stroke. He's extremely smart. He's a sixth-year senior, so he's really mature for being a college senior. He's competed in two different programs, he's competed at Washington, competed at Fresno State. And I was just really impressed with the person, how he plays. He's had several fourth-quarter comebacks. He does kind of remind you or there's some similarities to No. 9 (Drew Brees). He's undersized, the way he creates windows and processing speed, quick release, the accuracy."
The Saints will get to see Haener in action when OTAs begin later this month.
