The New York Giants are in need of reinforcements on defense, and it appears the front office is taking a chance on a former first-round pick. On Tuesday, the team announced that it signed Deone Bucannon.
Bucannon is a former first-round pick out of Washington State. He was the 27th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Tampa Bay recently part ways with Bucannon due to his lack of production. Prior to his stint with the Buccaneers, he found success with the Arizona Cardinals.
His best season came back in 2015, when he finished the year with 109 tackles and three sacks.
It makes sense for the Giants to add Bucannon since he's familiar with defensive coordinator James Bettcher. The two spent time together in Arizona from 2015-2017.
Bettcher will try to get the best out of the hybrid linebacker once again.
New York has lost depth at linebacker due to injuries, which includes Ryan Connelly and Kareem Martin.
The Giants have been looking for a hybrid linebacker/safety, especially after watching Landon Collins leave in free agency. Perhaps a change of scenery will help Bucannon reach his full potential.
Bucannon could potentially make his debut for the Giants this weekend when they face the Detroit Lions.
