The New York Giants turned to rookie quarterback Daniel Jones for the team's Week 3 match-up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Head coach Pat Shurmur benched longtime starter Eli Manning in favor of the young quarterback after Manning led the Giants to two-straight losses to open the season.
Following his decision to bench Manning, Shurmur called former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. Shurmur wanted the former Giants coach to know about Manning's benching before news outlets reported it.
Coughlin recounted the conversation to NJ.com:
"Pat Shurmur actually said to me, ‘He’s your guy, and I wanted you to know that I (did) a very difficult thing today. I told Pat, ‘Yeah, he is my guy. And guess what? He’ll always be my guy.’
What I say to him is I knew when this happened he knows he has my 100 percent support. But he will handle it with class and with dignity, and he will help the young guy (Jones) just like Kurt Warner helped him (in 2004). That’s what Eli is.”
The benching worked wonders for the Giants offense.
Jones threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for another two touchdowns in the team's win over Tampa Bay.
Next up for the Giants is a divisional game against the Washington Redskins.
