Watch: Eli Manning Gets Emotional Discussing His Benching With Media

Eli Manning speaks to the media in the locker room.

This is tough to watch.

The New York Giants announced today that Eli Manning will not start this Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. Backup Geno Smith will get the nod, ending Manning's streak of consecutive starts at 210, the second-most by a quarterback in NFL history.

This is a stunning move, even if the Giants are claiming it was partially Manning's decision. The team release says Manning was given the option of making the start to continue his streak and then being replaced during the game, but declined.

Manning met the media today to discuss the move, and the image of it was tough to watch. beat writer Dan Duggan has the footage of Manning choking back tears while answering questions.

The Giants are being killed for this move in the middle of a lost season, and deservedly so. Manning's play has declined some in recent years, but his supporting cast is abysmal due to poor management by GM Jerry Reese and a slew of injuries.

The move reeks of desperation from Reese and embattled head coach Ben McAdoo, both of whom could be out of jobs when the season ends.
