From 2011 to 2019, Cam Newton and Ron Rivera accomplished great things together with the Carolina Panthers. But they’ll be facing off as opponents tonight as Newton’s New England Patriots and Rivera’s Washington Football Team do battle in the preseason.
There’s no doubt at all that it will be a friendly matchup between the former MVP and former Coach of the Year. Prior to the game, the two were seen meeting on the field at Gillette Stadium.
And when they met it was quite the touching moment. Newton jogged over to Rivera, who was there to embrace him for a hug and a short conversation.
The video has quickly gone viral, garnering over 40,000 views, 1,500 likes and hundreds of shares in just a few minutes. And the comments are pretty wholesome too:

“Everyone in Charlotte is smiling…” one fan replied.
“This is too awesome. Love it and miss both of these guys,” another fan said in a retweet.
“This hit me right in the heart,” wrote another.
“I can’t believe I forgot this reunion was happening when I saw the Patriots and Washington were playing each other. Love everything about this,” a fourth fan tweeted.
Between 2011 and 2019, Newton and Rivera won three NFC South titles and made the playoffs four time. But their best season came in 2015, when they went 15-1 and reached their second Super Bowl in franchise history.
The two were both shown the door a few years later though. Rivera was hired by the Washington Football Team early in 2020 while Newton eventually signed and started the 2020 season for the Patriots.
What a touching moment.
