Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields had a solid first preseason game, going 12 of 14 on his final four drives and scoring two touchdowns. But he raised some eyebrows with comments he made after the game, including Booger McFarland’s.
Fields told the media after the 20-13 win over the Miami Dolphins that the game was getting “kind of slow” for him. McFarland took some exception to that on Monday.
Appearing on ESPN’s NFL Live, McFarland invoked an old saying that his mother used to use. “Don’t let your mouth write a check, that your butt can’t cash,” he said.
McFarland credited Fields for playing well in the game against the Dolphins. But he believes that opposing teams will be going after him harder now to try and shut him up.
However, he still feels that Fields should be the starting quarterback of the Bears right now.

The Chicago Bears traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft to take Justin Fields No. 11 overall after a historic career with the Ohio State Buckeyes. But despite making him their quarterback of the future, the Bears appear content to start the season with veteran Andy Dalton as their starter.
By all accounts though, Fields is dazzling in practice. And his recent preseason success might get him over the top.
If that happens, Fields might want to take some of Booger McFarland’s advice to heart and be more careful come NFL Sundays.
