This summer was a vital one for Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love. While he won’t be thrust into the starting role just yet thanks to the return of Aaron Rodgers, he did get a major portion of first-team of preseason snaps, his first game action in two years.
Love was a surprise pick by the team, which traded up in the backend of the 2020 NFL Draft’s first round to take him. Because of COVID-19, he did not get to participate in any preseason games in 2020, and didn’t suit up for the team during the regular season.
For a while, it looked like the Packers might have to plug Love in as QB1, with Rodgers holding out from the team during training camp. Instead, the team got a look at him in the preseason, and overall, it sounds like they came away impressed with the former Utah State standout.
“I thought he had a fantastic camp,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said. “I thought we saw the growth we needed to see.”
Brian Gutekunst on Jordan Love: "I thought he had a fantastic camp. I really did. … I thought we saw the growth we needed to see." He says Love showed poise in first live action in 2 years, kept his eyes downfield instead of on the rush, and was able to show a good right arm.

Based on training camp reports, Love had some really strong days, and some in which he struggled. In the preseason, it was definitely more good than bad, though the minor shoulder injury that cost him the second game was unfortunate.
Jordan Love was 12-for-17 for 122 yards and a touchdown against the Houston Texans in the team’s first preseason contest. Two weeks later against the Buffalo Bills, he was 12-for-18 for 149 yards, with an interception. He also ran for 16 yards.
Aaron Rodgers didn’t appear in the preseason. Kurt Benkert, who just re-signed with Green Bay’s practice squad, was also impressive, appearing in all three games for the Packers. In total, he was 33-for-48 for 300 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Jake Dolegala threw one pass in the game against the New York Jets, which was intercepted.
