Did the San Francisco 49ers attempt to trade for Green Bay Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Wednesday night?

According to one report on Thursday, the 49ers did just that.

Paul Allen of KFAN is reporting that the 49ers made a massive offer for Rodgers ahead of Thursday night's NFL Draft.

"The 49ers have offered the Packers the 3rd overall pick in this year's draft, plus other picks and a number of players from their current roster including Garoppolo for Aaron Rodgers. The Packers turned them down," he reports.

The NFL world does not seem to be buying this one, however, it's causing a lot of speculation across the league. Rodgers, of course, does not appear to be thrilled with his current situation in Green Bay, dating back to the Jordan Love pick in 2020. He's a California native and the 49ers have been mentioned as a potential destination if he were to leave Green Bay. Pro Football Talk calls the trade rumor a "beautiful mystery."

Pro Football Talk shared some more information:

The rumor of a Rodgers trade may not die so quickly. As one source who has heard the rumor explained it, the Packers haven’t restructured Rodgers contract to maximize cap space this year due in part to the possibility that they’ll get an offer for him that they can’t refuse. As another source who hadn’t heard the rumor but found it plausible remarked, it would be interesting to know whether any of this is being instigated by Rodgers — given his frustration with his year-to-year contract status and his potential desire to get to the West Coast, a preference that could soon be enhanced by a possible offer to become the permanent host of L.A.-based Jeopardy!

This rumor will likely go away once the 49ers make their pick on Thursday night, though. San Francisco has the No. 3 overall pick and is expected to select a quarterback. Once that happens, that will likely take the 49ers out of any Aaron Rodgers trade pipe dream.

It's certainly one of the more intriguing Draft Day rumors we've heard, though.
