As the Aaron Rodgers-Green Bay Packers situation continues to dominate the NFL offseason, we've now seen a few notable media figures suggest a bold move for the team to try and win him back over: trade for another superstar veteran, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones.
Jones' time with the Falcons appears to be coming to a close. The team is up against the salary cap, and dealing Jones after June 1 could provide serious relief. Of course, they don't want to give away one of the NFL's best receivers of the last decade for nothing.
ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio has already floated the idea of a Packers deal for Jones, in the hopes that it will help prove the team's dedication to Aaron Rodgers. Jones joining Davante Adams, along with useful role players like Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and promising rookie Amari Rodgers would give the Packers a very scary receiving corps.
ESPN's Tedy Bruschi agrees. He takes things a step further, saying the Packers should try to include second-year quarterback Jordan Love in the deal. The Falcons have their own aging veteran quarterback in Matt Ryan, so there's at least a shot that they're interesting in Love, though a deal for Jones would probably take more than just the one young quarterback.
"Should've thought about this before you drafted the quarterback in the first round," Bruschi said during his appearance on Get Up on Tuesday. "And here's what you do if you're a GM. If you want to fix this: publicly apologize to Aaron Rodgers, then trade Jordan Love for Julio Jones. Something drastic has to be done like that." The Green Bay Packers also have some salary cap concerns, so it is far from this simple. Even so, dealing Love, who the team moved up in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft to select, and bringing in a major weapon would be a clear signal to Rodgers that the franchise erred last year, and wants to give continue to push for a second Super Bowl with the 2020 MVP. Without something "drastic," as Bruschi put it, it is unclear how easily the relationship between the Packers and Rodgers can be salvaged. [
