Carolina Panthers Release CB Bené Benwikere, Zack Sanchez To Start

CB Bené Benwikere was cut today by the Carolina Panthers and will be replaced by rookie Zack Sanchez.

After a 49-33 rout by the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday, a game in which the Carolina defense gave up 12 receptions for 300 yards and a touchdown to Julio Jones, some defensive changes were in order. One of those changes apparently included cutting CB Bené Benwikere, who was responsible for covering him most of the game.

Benwikere told The Charlotte Observer that his conditioning played a role in the mediocre coverage, as he spent most of early training camp recovering from a broken bone in his leg that he suffered in December 2015.At any rate, it looks like rookie Zack Sanchez will be taking his place in the lineup.

Sanchez was one of the three cornerbacks selected in the 2016 draft intended to fill the void left in the secondary by Josh Norman.

The 1-3 Panthers take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday night.
