On Friday, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Shi Smith was arrested. He was charged on possession of an unlawful handgun and a narcotic with intent to distribute.

ESPN's David Newton had an update on Smith's status. He was released from the county detention center, but had to pay off two separate bonds.

"I am told Panthers WR Shi Smith has been released from the Union County (S.C.) Detention Center on bonds totaling $6,000," Newton tweeted. "Among the charges, possession of an unlawful firearm and possession of a narcotic with intent to distribute."

A spokesperson for the Panthers said they're aware of the charges against Smith.

Last year, the Panthers selected Smith in the sixth-round. In his rookie season, he had six catches for 104 yards.

The South Carolina product is entering the second year of his rookie deal. It's unclear if this legal situation will complicate matters for the Panthers.

Smith must attend a court appearance in Union County on June 14.
