Drew Brees has been durable for nearly all of his time in New Orleans, but the future Hall of Famer will miss at least the next month to nurse a thumb injury. He's scheduled to have surgery this afternoon to repair torn ligaments in his thumb.
On Monday, the Saints were dealt the difficult news regarding Brees. His absence puts pressure on quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill to keep the team in the playoff hunt.
Although the All-Pro quarterback obviously wants to be on the field with his teammates, he sounds ready to tackle the next challenge in his career.
Prior to his surgery, Brees took a picture with his wife Brittany. The timing of his surgery isn't ideal since it's her birthday, but they're making the best of this situation.
Brees posted the photo on Instagram with the following caption:
"Heading into surgery with this beautiful gal by my side. This is what she gets to do on her birthday today! I love you Brittany. More and more everyday!"
The Saints face the Seattle Seahawks on the road this weekend and then host the Dallas Cowboys next Sunday.
With Brees out for the foreseeable future, the upcoming schedule for New Orleans looks much more difficult than it did before.
Hopefully, the 40-year-old quarterback can return to full strength for the second half of the season.
