Earlier this week, Yahoo Sports insider Charles Robinson reported that Thomas had a productive meeting with Saints head coach Sean Payton to discuss their differences over the All-Pro wide receiver’s rehab process. The medical staff wanted Thomas to undergo ankle surgery right after the playoffs, but he waited until June.
More promising news came the Saints’ way this Saturday, as Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reported that Thomas would be in attendance for the team’s preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. If that wasn’t enough good news for the Saints this weekend, NFL insider Jason La Canfora has more.
La Canfora is reporting that Thomas could return from his ankle injury “sooner than later.” He also believes Thomas’ relationship with the Saints can be fixed.
“Sean Payton told me on Friday that he expected Michael Thomas will be back ‘sooner rather than later’ and expressed strong confidence in him for 2021 season,” La Canfora tweeted. “Obviously he is still recovering from surgery now but sounds like they can salvage this relationship.”

New Orleans has a lot of money invested in Thomas over the next four years. It’d be best for the franchise if it can work out this problem.
The same can be said for Thomas, who has shown that he can be an elite playmaker in Sean Payton’s offense. In 2019, he broke the single-season record for most receptions.
Only time will tell if the Saints can truly mend their relationship with Thomas.
