Earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shocked the rest of the NFL by releasing former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves. There weren’t any doubts about his talent, but the Florida product wasn’t giving his team the type of effort they were looking for.
When the Buccaneers officially made the decision to cut Hargreaves, head coach Bruce Arians made it very clear that the team couldn’t wait any longer for the young cornerback to turn the corner.
Tampa Bay surrendered a few big plays on Sunday to Arizona with one of them occurring simply because Hargreaves didn’t hustle.
Arians gave a little insight as to why the Buccaneers released Hargreaves on SiriusXM Radio. He didn’t hold back his true feelings at all.
“I love Vernon, he’s a great kid. But there’s just too many times on film his effort wasn’t good enough,” Arians said. “A player controls two things: He controls his effort and his attitude. If those things don’t match up to what you want as a team, then it’s time to move on.”
Here’s the audio from Arians’ interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio:

Hargreaves may have to worry about his reputation around the league, but he won’t have to worry about finding a new home.
The Houston Texans claimed Hargreaves on Wednesday afternoon. Perhaps the change of scenery will help the talented cornerback.
